The above videos were taken at Coachella (which I did not attend) this year during Adam Freeland’s set. As you can see, Adam Freeland brilliantly interjected a Speak ‘n Spell call and response over the track “Aerodynamic” by Daft Punk. While these may not be household names to most top 40 radio followers, you may recognize the robotic French duo, Daft Punk, from Kanye West’s hit “Stronger.” I can’t really explain Adam Freeland without getting into a long discussion, so I’ll just tell you he’s a small troll-ish looking British man with a pretty good ear for music.
Also, if you don’t know what a breakbeat is, please reference Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s speech to the NAACP. Specifically, the part about black people clapping on the 2 and the 4.
I know I’m relatively new to this politics thing, but this is the first time in my short voting lifetime that I’ve seen such a blatant outcry of support from younger musicians and artists for any particular political figure. I saw the Roots last month and before they came on stage there were Obama volunteers on the mic directing people to tables set up near by where they could sign up to vote and to volunteer. Then there was the 30-minute long protest song the played (which completely lost me after about 5 minutes).
Anyway, to finally get to my point. While the involvement of young people and their support for Barack Obama in this election is old news, I still find it all extremely exciting.
If only there was a such a movement to similarly get the older “white Americans, hard-working Americans” on the bus…
Kenny Chesney 4 Obama?
